O2 Sensors

I was searching the archives, since I'm getting the "my car reeks of unburnt gas" problem on my car (see sig), and it sounds like, based on the archives, my O2 sensor is gone.

I know it wasn't replaced during last year's tune-up, because I wasn't billed for parts pertaining to an O2 sensor.

I popped a code scanner into my car and ran it, but it didn't give me any trouble codes.

I read in one of those archived threads that this part can be replaced during a tune-up.

Is this true? I'd hate to throw $120 out the window only to find out that they don't replace the O2 sensor. Or is it one of those "you should call the shop and see if they do that" things?

TIA

look for a saturated charcoal canister as the source of your gas smell.

I don't have the time to do it myself, could a shop like Pep Boys replace this part for me?

Oh yeah, I forgot, I cleaned out my K&N filter about 5 months ago, and I just had my fuel filter replaced 4 months ago, if that adds any additional info.

TIA

I don't know... if you have time to drop it off at pep boys, chances are you have time to change it out yourself. I did mine in about 5 minutes -- It's fairly simple. It screws out, it screws in, you hook up the wire.

The tools I used:

Breaker bar (it was really stuck on there)
Ratchet w/ flex head
1' extension
O2 sensor socket

Now, some people don't like using the o2 sensor socket because it can slip if you don't have it on there good, which leads to some nasty looking knuckles. So they usually just cut the wire and use a deep socket to get it off. I've also heard of people using a standard wrench and going at it from the bottom side of the car.

In any case, if you do decide to do this yourself, do it while the exhaust manifold is still warm. Makes it a little easier. Also be sure that the threads have some kind of antisieze on them.
