A slight problem
Ok I am having some trouble here. I couldn't find another thread for this, so I chose this one. anyway, here the thing. I want to purchase a, as the ad claims, a 1987 IROC-Z with a 350TPI. i checked it out today, its in rough shape, yeah yeah, anyway, i saw the square shift ****, so i knew it was a 350. i got home and wanted the VIN number, and he gave me one. unfortunally, when i checked it, it turned out to be a 1988 with a 305. now i distictly saw the square ****, and i know that only real 350's had them, so either he gave me the wrong VIN, or what. any ideas on what the hell is going on there? am i right about the shifter ****?
Actually, the square shift **** wasn't limited to only the 350's. (Mine's a 305tbi IROC from '89 that has a square shift ****.) If you want to be sure about the engine, check the casting numbers. It might really have a 350 in it after all, who knows. And to check the casting numbers, go to www.mortec.com -- they'll tell you where to look for them, and what the numbers mean. Prepare to bring a mirror and a flashlight, or, if you have an eyeball at the top of a tentacle or something, that would make things easy too. heh.

My friend has a square **** on his '91 Camaro, of course his is an RS with the 3.1 litre engine. Shift ***** mean absolutly nothing, and besides, if they did, what's to stop the guy from swapping *****.
If the vin decoder says alot. It will tell you the year of the car, as well as the year of the engine (EXAMPLE: I have an 85 car, but an 86 motor. My Chiltons backs this up by vacuum diagrams and such. VIN decoder picked this up as well, my production number is very high, made in October of 1985, one of the last cars of that year...).. thats one thing...
If the vin decoder says a 305, it's a 305 unless the guy has recipts that he swapped in a 350. If he doesn't have recipts and insists it's a 350, tell him he's wrong, tell him why, and if he still deny's it, walk away. You could always get dirty and check the block numbers, but then be wary of a hack job swap...
