what's the best way to bypass a heater core without having hoses running all over looking stupid?

Follow the hoses back as far as possible towards the water pump and either remove the two hoses and replace with a short piece of hose or cut them and use a coupling and a couple of clamps.

i saw a pic somewhere that there were no hoses at all. I don't know if they just plugged the intake and waterpump and took the thermostat out or what they did.

grab a couple 1/2" brass plugs to put in the intake and waterpump. Its a hella lot nice looking than a piece of hose running across the 2 for no reason. You might also be able to find chrome plugs if you like the bling.

that wouldn't be good for the pump to push against a closed thermostat would it?

I have no heater core at all and plugs in the intake and water pump. It's a high flow Miloden. No problems at all.

I took the two hoses off the firewall and connected them with a 6" piece of brass pipe. Tighten up two clamps and your good to go.

FYI.

Getting those hoses off the firewall was a chore. They were seared on there pretty good. 17 years and lots of heat from the engine.
