new cam and high pitched noise

I could use some help.

I installed a new cam and lifter set last week and while breaking in the cam, I got a rattling noise like I had a bad lifter. To make a long story short, I pulled the cam to find one of the cam lobes worn way down and the corresponding lifter was trashed.

I just installed another new cam and lifter set this week. No more lifter noise, but there is a suttle, yet annoying, high pitched squeek that speeds up with engine speed. It's difficult to tell exactly where the noise is coming from, but it's definitely coming from mid engine on back (not an accessory noise). I'm thinking either cam bearing or distributor gear.

Can a cam bearing make a real high pitched noise or just a knocking sound?

Has anybody experienced a similar noise from an old distributor gear?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Chris

What year is the engine? On some of the older 70's engine they had alot of mismachined blocks with misdrilled starter bolt holes and lifter bores that dont point at the cam.

The engine is a GM crate stock replacement engine with about 70,000 miles. I put the engine in myself about 10 years ago.
