a cam question for my 305
a cam question for my 305
First I amthink i may like to get a bit more power out of my camaro
its the old LG4 - runs good - the previous owner replaced the original cam because the lobes went flat, but he stuck a stock replacement one back in there.
Is an old 305 worth sticking a cam into?
Whats the duration that anyone would recommend?
3.73gears
edelbrock performer
holley 750 vac secondary
I am thinking along the lines of the 327/350hp grind (222 degress at 50, - 447 lift - 112 LS) Would this be a good cam for a 305?
BTW I don't want to hear "put in a 350" because if I had one thats what I would do!!!

i put a crane cams .467 lift 222dur @.50 which is pretty close to the cam you mentioned, only a bit higher lift and the lobe sep. is different.
you can buy it from jegs for like $130 i think and it comes with a full set of new lifters and assembly lube which is a pretty good deal. i know it woke my 305 up pretty damn good

nope, the stock 305 heads can handle .470" with the stock springs, the .467" is right underneath that, so the stock springs are still good. you will have to keep the stock rockers though, upgrading to 1.6 rockers would be too much lift on the springs, but even with the stock 1.5 rockers that came was a good cam, power kicked in around 3000 rpm and pulled to around 5500, nice idle, it will probably do better in your car than it did in mine since i had 3.23 gears and you have 3.73's

CompCams XE256 cam would be great for your motor. 212/218 duration.
XE262 is another great 305 cam. 218/224 duration @ .050"

Back when I had an LG4 in my Caprice, I had the Xe256 in it and loved it. Warmer than the factory un-bumpy stick, but not hot enough to cause everything to go into some strange funk.
I got the K-kit, which came with all the needed parts (changed out to posi valve seals while the springs were off, highly recommended).
Don't reuse the factory valve springs, rotators, etc. They suck. Get springs that match the cam. Get the corresponding retainers and locks as well, though you could probably reuse the locks, if they are decent enough.
