That depends on what parts the engine's built out of.

I was wondering pretty much the same thing. How do you know what your redline is after you change your engine displacement?

The redline on a car has to do with the strength of the cars internal parts, like rods, pistons, crank, etc. After I got the redline for that figured out, THEN I would find the redline of the engine's power. (So, if I had an engine that had an engine rated to 7000rpms, but only made power to 6000rpm, I'd shift at 6000 even though the engine could safely rev higher, since it'd be useless to do so.)

I agree with Enkil. You should think that there are two redlines - one that the engine can mechanically handle (based on the internal parts) and the other based on where the max power occurs.

Mechanically, you want to make sure the top end (valve springs, etc) can still make power without having "valve float" occur, then that the bottom end will hold together at that RPM.

I currently have a friend with a 383 and a Miniram that makes max power at 6,000 rpm and the engine was built to handle 6,500 rpm. The Miniram will allow the engine to rev way past 6,000 rpm, but since the cam selected was designed to make it's max power at 6,000 rpm, it does not make much sense to rev the engine past 6,000 rpm.

If my friend was to select a cam that allowed him to make max power above 6,500 rpm, my friend would have to relook at his engine's bottom and top end to support those higher rpm levels.

Basically, the cam (along with matching intake and heads) will determine where you make max power. The engine's internals will determine if the engine can handle it, without something failing.

very few 383s make peak hp above 6000. It takes lots of head flow.

big cube moters do not need to spin to the moon to make power like the smaller engines, the 383 and 400 make all its power right off the bat and make tons of chassis twisting torque, they will be hauling right away, unlike a 350 or smaller there just getting started at about 3,3,500 RPM
