Checking valve size with heads on engine, possible?

Or would I have to completely remove the head from the block?

Why I am asking is because I have 305 heads on a 350 block and would like to to know if there is a way to decipher between stock 305 valve size and a larger than stock valve size without actually removing the head.

Can I measure the width of the valve with a micro or something like that?

Not unless your micrometer will fit through the spark plug hole.

I was kind of thinking maybe with the valve cover off, I could measure the top of the valve by the keeper? But guess not.

get a bore scope and take a spark plug out and take a gander at your combustion chamber

That will tell you the size of the valve stem, not the valve head.

you could always take off the intake and the headers and look down the ports. you wouldnt get and exact measurement, but i bet you could probably get a pretty good idea. and if not, youre halfway to removing the head anyway.

If you could view inside the combustion chamber you could compare the space beween the intake and exhaust valve in the head , with another stock 305 head with stock valves.
larger valves would have less space between them. 2.02x 1.60 valves almost touch.
