Physical block differences between two piece and one piece seal

Besides the obvious crank and flexplate differences, what else is different about them. Do both have provisions for a knock sensor, etc. I finally found a rebuildable 350 short block, but I want to make sure it is compatible. I currently have a 1986 IROC with the LG4 and I want to put a 350 in it. Some of the rebuild kits I have found say "to 1984" then others say "87 and up"

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, all else is the same.

THe knock sensor goes in the pass side coolant drain hole. All SBCs since 1955 have had the same hole in the same place so there's no possibility of a problem there.

The '86 was kind of a bastard, having the one-piece rear main but still the old flat tappet cam. The kit assembliers don't like one-year-only kits, so they don't list them.

Not sure why '85 would be left out.

The only other diff. is that on the front of the cam/lifter oil galarys is that the plugs for a non onpiece block has press in plugs like freese plugs and the one piece blocks have screw in plugs for those oil gallarys.

Not really. I've had to tap every roller block I have had my hands on, they all had press in plugs.

Pretty sure the oil pan is different.

As far as the oil pan then, is the pan itself different so I will just use mine, or is the mounting face different?

Blocks up to about 1980 had the oil dipstick on the left. Starting in about 77 or 78 they began to move them over to the right. This is not a 1-piece RMS vs. 2-piece RMS issue though. There are lots of 2-piece blocks in the world that have the RH dipstick.

The oil pan is different, and the block is different where the pan goes. The pans definitely DO NOT interchange. The difference is easy to spot; if the block is for a LH dipstick, the tube plugs into the block on the head deck and comes out the bottom, with a section of the pan flange bulged out to include it, and the pass side pan flange is straight. In a block with RH dipstick, there is a small protrusion of casting near the pan flange where the tube goes, the pan flange has the bulge to include that, and the driver's side flange is straight.

This has nothing to do with the rebuild kit, only the gasket set (and the pan if your block doesn't come with one).
