Porting Heads: is it worth it?
Porting Heads: is it worth it?
I did some grinding on a spare set of 3.1 heads, intake gasket match, smoothed guide boss, and smoothed the ridge just below the valve seat a little bit. I figure the valve job, springs, gaskets, and milling will put me 150-200 dollars, plus all the time it will take me to install the heads will be anywhere from 8-12 hours. MY question is will I see a 10-12 hp gain out of this work and money?
BTW I have these mods, crane 2030 cam, headers, caback, and intake for increased air flow.

Hi.
If you have taken care of your exhaust(headers, HP muffler), and if your car is properly tuned, in my opinion you should be able to reach your goal. But probably you are going to need new stainless steel valves,
and machine work in not cheap.
PS. The exhaust always reponds better to porting than intake to concentrate your efforts there.
I would buy a book about porting if I were you. There is lots of tricks, ideas and step by step procedure how to....??
So good luck.

I'd seriously put the money into a savings account and buy a L98 car. I have nothing against V6 cars, but if you want to go fast that bad then swap for a V8 or just buy a L98 car. I know I'm gonna hear it from all the V6 guys, but I think its just a waste of money. Sure it'll be fastER, but you'll still get taken by almost any new luxury car. If you really want the couple of tenths (from maybe a 16.9 to a 16.5) then go for it.
See what I mean? Im not trying to be a d*ck.
Peace

either that or I was looking to find some *** cheap used slcks(like thats going to be easy), to actually get some good 60 foots. 3.73s and non posi dont seem to wok to well. A nice 50 shot would be nice to keep slower mustangs, and ricers off my back.

Yes, anything you do to increase the flow will give you more power even on a 3.1.
If I were you I would look into some bigger valves also.

3.1, I think you'll see some extra HP. You might also need to get an AFPR after installing the heads. A guy I used to talk with, James, had headwork done to a 4th gen 3.8 (and touched 13 seconds!)- after his headwork, his times dropped. He hooked up a scanner, and found out he was running lean- an AFPR to bump his fuel pressure up did the trick.

They had a guy on Hot Rod TV a few months back running a 3rd gen with a V6 and he was hitting 10s in the quarter mile!!!!
It sounded kind of weird when it was doing its burnout but it went like nobody's business, I'll say that
