Changing Chips
Changing Chips
Is there any reason an aftermarket chip for a 87 L98 IROC would not work in an 88 GTA L98? And where is the computer located so I can get to the chip? Thanks.

Computer should be behind the dash, on the passenger side (where the glovebox would be on another car). Some are only velcroed, some are bolted in.
Chip should be interchangeable if they both have same transmission.

Make sure they have the same ECU. There will be a service number on the ECU that you can use to check if they are the same. Looking at Traxion's PROM article it appears that the same ECUs were used in '87 and '88 so it shouldn't be any problem. I would check to make sure anyway, though.

I checked the chips and they are the same. I was told when I bought the iroc that it had a hypertech chip, but it doesn't so I'm leaving them alone. I wanted to swap all my go fast stuff off the old roc before she sells. All I have to get off is the airfoil now. Thanks for the help.

The 88 and 87 are virtually idental. Both use the $32B calibration. 1986s use the $32 and 1989s use the $6E.
The most radically different is the 1989 calibration and even THAT will work on a 86-88 TPI. All you have to do is disconnect the Cold Start Injector.
When guys get into eprom burning for their MAF TPI cars (86-89), we always recommend that they go with the 89 Memcal and burn start with the ARAP BIN. This is the most aggressive of the MAF BINs and was used for automotive test magazines. Basically has more spark advance and a better calibration of the MAF Scalar Tables.
The only "odd ball" is the 1985 TPIs. They use an entirely different ECM and was GM's "first attempts". If a person with an 85 TPI wants to get into prom burning, we usually recommend they convert either to the later year MAF (165s) or convert to SD.
