Means the voltage to the fuel pump was low for a second. it could mean the wiring is going bad or the connection to the ECM or the FP relay or the FP itself. I have this code intermittently too and its a bitch to diagnose ( had the problem for 5 years! )

Had the same problem. I replaced the ecm and the problem was solved.

I noticed that the guys who said they have this problem too drive 88's. I got that code and had my mechanic look at it. He said that his computer (don't know how) said that it is a common problem in 88 camaro's, corsica's, and beretta's......I was told I would have to drive with it until something broke to the point of no longer working to be able to tell exactly what was wrong with it or I could shell out the cash and replace ever part of the circuit

I got a code 54 just before my fuel pump died. I think it's just a coincidence that you all have 88s. It is very common on TPI cars actually.

Also, high fuel pressure (50psi or higher) will tend to burn out your fuel pump quicker. But the fuel pumps on these cars are not exactly the best. I know guys with less miles on their car than mine, and they are on their 3rd pump.

mines an '86 though. the code only comes on at a start, never when driving. you still think its the fuel pump?

No, I still say its the ecm. When you start your car you probably don't hear the pump come on right away. That's why the 54 sets--ecm doesn't sense any voltage to the pump. Only after the oil pressure comes up will it build any fuel pressure.
I am stilling sticking with the problem being the ecm.

Viking, you've got an '86, eh? Exactly what would you give me for a code 54 chart?

Hey, I'll run a bonus today- visit this old message, I've typed it up already. It's from my '86 GM service book, and you can trace all the wires easily. If all the wires come out fine, then it's probably your ECM. The message is at: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001981.html

Well considering the 86 and 88 use the same ECM...

Anyway, that code will happen from a bad fuel pump relay or from a bad ECM, or the wiring between. The relay is the cheapest and easiest thing to replace. You don't even need to buy anything. Swap it with the MAF Burnoff relay that's right next to it and see if it still throws a 54 or if it now throws a 36. That'll tell you whether it's the relay or the ECM.

You can also use a digital multimeter to test it. Set the multimeter on the thin green wire that goes into the relay. This is the wire from the ECM. If you've got voltage for a few seconds after you turn the key, then it's probably not the ECM (Or it's at least functioning properly but still throwing the code). To test the output of the relay, put the DMM probes across the two fat wires to the relay. One is power and one is ground (I forget which is which, but it doesn't really matter) and if the relay is working, you'll get +12 or -12 volts on the meter depending on which probe is touching which wire. Whatever you do, don't use a test-light to troubleshoot this.
