I have to put the distributotr back in my engine and set the initial timing. What position is the rotor supposed to be in? i just want the stock setting so the car will fire right up. Thanks.

If the motor has not been turned over since you removed the distributor you put it back in with the rotor pointing the same direction it was when you took it out. You DID mark the rotor postion on the firewall or other immovable object, didn't you?

If it's new motor or the motor has been turned over since then, then you need to spin the engine to TDC ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE and drop it in so that the rotor is pointed at the #1 plug wire on the cap.

Final timing MUST be set with a timing light. You can not just look at it and know what the timing is.
