ANY old car will give you a headache, unless it has less than, say, 50,000 miles on it.

Welcome aboard,
Obvisouly you get what you pay for. If you don't want headaches don't get something with a lot of miles on it, but no matter what these cars aren't new and they will have their problems. If you don't want any headaches plan on spending around $7-8k I would think.
And be picky, don't settle for just any car, get one that has the options you like with good milage. And be sure that the previous owner took care of it. Look under the car for rust and check the oil dipstick to see the condition of the oil. Ask when the last oil change was and tune up, me I know exactly what milage the car had on it last oil change, and most people that care about their cars will have some idea. Also check the tranny fluid to make sure it isn't low, who knows how long it was low, if it were low. And if you get an auto, make sure to put a tranny cooler on it, to save some headaches with the 700R4.

For reliability, get a fuel injected one. I have had better luck with the tbi than the tpi. It seems more reliable and is much easier to trouble shoot.

They're right do a lot shopping around. I looked for mine for about 6 months before I found my 92 firebird. I got it a year ago for $4500, I'm the third owner. got most of th maint. records for it. and it only had 60k miles. According to the last owner, the car had never seen a winter. So far the only repairs have been an alternator, and a starter. The exhaust was my choice. Happy hunting you won't be sorry if you do your homework. The car now has 110k miles on it.

1. be picky. see what engine/colours/options/year you like most and get the one in best shape
2. after the mechanical inspection be sure to calculate how much are gonna cost to repair stuff
3. i did'nt get my car with t-tops: it's stiffer and can drive in the rain
for more info go to my site and on the links page go to "steve ta's" he explains very well the advantages there...
good luck, and take your time: you won't regret!

Patience is they key here. It's not always a get what you pay for situation. Some people think they have gold while other undervalue what they have. Search around. Go for what is most important to you. If you are mechanically enclined, you can give or take based on your strengths or what you deam important.

I just payed $700 for an 87 Firebird Formula. It's an L98 with 57k on the clock. I purchased it from the second owner who has had it for 6 years. Doesn't burn anything, nor leak anything other than it's need for a new radiator. I went by what fit my needs. The car does need a new radiator and has a dent in the front fender. It also can use some tires in about 10k miles. Other than that, the car is in great shape and has a new alt, starter, custom exhaust, maf and everything is under warranty.

The best piece of advise I can give you is that the best deals are often not advertised and word of mouth can lead you to a great deal. This guy was thinking about seling the car, told my neighbor, who relayed the news to me and bam, for $700 I got a very reliable, well mantained car and have plenty of money left over for a new radiator and fender.

Don't go by price, you can end up paying thousands for something someone else will let go cheap and vise versa.
