Jacking the camaro up

i need to know how i can jack my camaro up high enuff so i can do an engine swap at home

its a 5 speed so i will need enough room to access the clutch

i'm sure there must be a way besides digging a pit in my garage

also what SPECIAL tools would i need for an engine swap??

torque wrench, clutch alignment tool, hydraulic clutch line puller, engine hoist

what else????

i have a pretty good amount of tools at home since i am going to school to become a mechanic

Transmission: T-5

I may be wrong, but you will probably need a lift. Using a jack on these cars are tricky because of the low clearance and position of the frame rails. Its even worse if you have a fat-a$$ Y-pipe like I do.

You might be able to do the job with wheel ramps. I'm sure someone else here can give you more info.

For special tools: engine hoist & torque wrence will be a must.

You should be able to pull the motor out without the car even being off the ground. I did. But I pulled my 5spd out first and the engine(much easier).

I used a regular floor jack to put the car up on railroad ties. Just keep adding blocks on the jack to get it high enough.

I think I used 3 courses of ties. It was plenty high enough to pull out my 700R4 on a tranny jack. If an auto can come out, a T5 will definately do it.

Edit: Take the engine out with the tranny if you can. It will be much easier.

Car: 1986 Firebird
Engine: 2.8 V6
Transmission: 700R4
When I dropped my trans down, I just raised it as high as I could, in all four corners, using my jackstands. I had no trouble getting under there, or getting the trans out.

When I did a 2.8/2.8 swap for a friend (pictures! http://www.geocities.com/tomp_3rdgen ), we raised the front of the car, and broke free the trans-to-engine bolts. Then, we lowered the car to the ground, put a hydraulic jack under the trans (with a block of wood between the jack and trans pan), removed the trans-to-engine bolts, removed the motor mount thru bolts, and yanked the engine.

So we didn't use any other tools than the ones you mentioned.. and we didn't even need clutch alignment stuff.

you can get to the clutch by putting the car on jackstands. the engine also does come out from the top, so you won't need to raise the car for that. Fairly straightforward. I think you may be able to do all the clutch work with the engine and trans out of the car and then install it all backas one unit. At least it seems logical to me.

thanx for all your help guys!!!!!!!!!

i figured there was a way to do it
and that definetly makes sense to me!!!!!!!

our T5's use hydraulic clutch linkage right???

now here's the kicker

i am swapping from a V6 to a MILD 350

i know all the comments i am going to get about the tranny but all i can say is I KNOW I WILL PROBABLY BLOW IT THEN I HAVE A GOOD EXCUSE FOR A T56!!!!!!!!!

but i am doing a total carbed 350 swap

i am going to get the GM goodwrench 350 crate engine with something like 250 HP for $1300

what will be a good carb to use????
i think 650 cfm will suffice but what one???
and what kinda choke and all that stuff

what do i do with my purge cannister???

i know it has a two piece Rear Main Seal so what kinda flywheel and pressure plate will i need?

what would be a good ignition set-up????

i'll prolly get rid of the stock manifold and get an Edelbrock

and i'm also gonna get rid of my A/C since i never use it anyway

then i am planning a T56 and a posi/disc/ 4.11 rear end

i am basically gonna build up a nice fun car for myself

i'll also need some sub frame connectors

but i'm not planning on racing the car once i get the engine in

after i get all the other stuff yeah

i also need to move a brake line

and new front springs

headers

new radiator

new motor mounts

what accessories that i currently have can i keep???

i think i will need a new P.S. pump

i think my altenator will work

and how should i wire my fan???

thats another thing i am going to do

upgrade to a dual fan unit

no computer crap

dont care about emissions

anything else i forgot to cover???
