Gettin' the distributor straight

Finally got my car running after the head swap, but I still got a problem. I set up the distributor had #1 and #8 forwardmost on it, but to get the car running I had to turn the distibutor about a 1/4 turn counterclockwise. (the plug wires are too short to rotate it anymore) The more I move it back the better it idles. It won't idle any less than 2500 rpm or so. I am guessing I am off teeth, but which way and how many? Thanks again for all the help, I couldn't have done it without you guys. This site kicks @$$!

you might want to move the plug wires all one post to get more room on the wires instead of taking the distributor out. just have to remember where you moved #1 to. have you had a light on the engine? might want to check timing before you go pulling the distributor again. if you pull it put the timing marks on 6* BTDC with both valves closed on #1 then install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 on the cap.

I am confused about moving the wires, If I move them all one post, then I will have to rotate the cap back 1 post and be back where I started right?
I do have a timming light (with the est disconnected) I cannot even see the timming mark.
BTDC is toward the passenger or drivers side of TDC?

Congrats on getting it started! Another thirdgen.org success story. Warms my heart...
I can see how it could be kinda confusing, I'll try to help. What ede meant about rotating the wires was to rotate each wire over one post in the opposite direction that you're trying to turn the distributor. You rotate the whole distributor, not just the cap. By moving all the wires over one post you make it so it can be timed correctly without stretching the wires.
Rotating the dist clockwise retards the timing, counterclockwise advances it. Look closely at the timing tab. The marks that are closer to the passenger side of the car are labeled BTDC. You want the balancer mark to match up to 6 on this side of the tab when you shine the timing light on it. The side of the tab that is closest to the drivers side is ATDC which is too retarded.
Hope this helps.
