Driveshaft / Trans Question

I have trans fluid leak at the driveshaft and I noticed that the shaft is a rusty orange color, except for the quarter inch or so just before it goes into the seal. This last quarter inch is a clean metallic silver color with a thin film of trans fluid over it. I am wondering if it is because the shaft has been treated in some non-rust way there, or is it because the shaft has backed its way out of the trans about a quarter inch?. (I've heard of transmissions "walking" forward over time.)
btw, the car runs fine, just leaks some trans fluid.

Thanks

I doubt your tranny has moved, its because the front of the driveshaft is a "slip joint" and as the rear axle moves up and down, the diveshaft slides in and out.

As for the leak, you may just need a new seal, or it could be that the "rust line" is to far up and is occasionally making contact w/ the seal chewing it up. In that case, take some emery cloth and polish it up a bit to make it smooth. Worst case scenario is the extension housing bushing is shot allowing the driveshaft to move to much inside the seal.
