Worth of a original 302?

This has to be one of the best resources of engine knowledge that i have, TGO. So i ask, my friend just got a old 69 C-10 from his uncle, who said that he replaced the old 350 in the truck with a 302. Well so far ive ran the casting numbers on the block, and they are 010, wich according to mortec, were 302, 327, and the popular 350. Ive have yet to pull the valve covers, but the heads do have the classic Double humb cast, meaning that they are probly 302/327 heads.

Lets say this is a numbers matching 302 with heads, wouldnt it be worth some money to a guy rebuilding/restoring a old z28?

i dont know a whole lot about the old 302s, but one guy is telling me that they are supost to make some 425hp stock, there is no way its making that power as it sits. Only thing ive noticed about it, is its lack of low end with the 3.73s or 4.10s or so i was told(gota check this weekend) but when just bliping the trottle it will quickly snap up to 6k, with an untouched 6yr old ignition, and a 15yr old Quadrajet.

Depending on what engine it is, i might just tell him its junk, and take it off his hads

Then again ive already got a std 010 350 with some vortecs sitting in the garauge.

numbers matching 302
Yeah, that'd be worth something; if of course you had the thing the numbers would match to, namely, the car.

You can't tell if it's a 302 by the block or the heads. You need to know what crank is in it.

Since it can't possibly be a "numbers matching" setup, if it's possible for it to be a 302 in the first place (if the block was cast in 69, not 74 or something for example), you might ebay it and just see what it brings.

Lots of 350s came with double-hump heads. In fact, my usual source for those for the last 30-odd years, has been 69-70 Impalas and station wagons. That particular kind (186 casting mostly), which is the same ones that came on the 69 302, even have the accessory bolt holes.

If it's a 010 block and heads without bolt holes, then there's NO WAY it's an original 302; just a bunch of parts jammed together that happen to make 302 CID.

The original 302 didn't make 425 HP stock, but might have done 325 (as compared to its "rating" of 290). You could probably get to 360 or so by replacing the cast manifolds with headers.

All of Smokey's tricks barely got one to 480 HP. LOL.
