Weird Problem

Ive been having troubles with getting my car to start. But the thing is that it will start perfect sometimes and other times it will just keep trying and trying and trying and wont start. Usually to get it to start I have to pop the hood, and open up the carb by hand. But when I do this some kinda smoke or gas or vapor comes pouring out of the carb. I have to let it all get out then it will start. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Also, I am losing a lot of oil. I will have to put about a quart in a week. I dont know where it could be going, and I have checked the pan or leaks and it has none. I have ckecked to make sure the filter is on tight and it is. So, Im out of ideas. Anyone know what this could be?

If you have to open the choke plate by hand, the pull-off is probably not adjusted correctly, or is not working.

Not enough information on the oil. The two main possibilities are burning and leakage. If you aren't leaving puddles that attract Chevron workers when you leave the parking spot, it might be burning. A compression or cylinder leakage test might help identify problems with oil control.

This is all presuming that it is equipped with a standard E4ME or 4MV carb. Determine if the choke pull off is even operating. If it is, adjust (bend) the linkage rod so the pull off opens the choke plate the specified amount at 10" Hg. vacuum. Generally, the choke opening should be in the range of 0.200" or more - I'd have to look at the sheets to get the absolute correct specification.

EDIT: It appears that your's should be adjusted to a 0.130" opening, by the book.

Im not sure. Are there any markings on the carb itself that would let me know what model it is?

If your lucky their should be a small metal tag attatched to one of the screws.
