Car Blowing UP????
Car Blowing UP????
Well I just got a new 305 complete Block......I have a very serious leak with my 700r4 (stock with 116000),....When I tried to start it the other day, it cranked then I heard grinding metal, when i got out of the car It smelt like somethin had spun or had burned! Since I did'nt replace the Tranny and did'nt put in any fluid to it do you guys think it mighta been the tranny, I'm gonna be replacing the unit with an 700r4 Raptor but is this what happens when the tranny is run on low Fluid?

Hey Cloud, just how low on fluid was the tranny? My dumb a** started up an engine w/o adding tranny fluid one time, it was about 5 qts low. No grinding or squealing, but there was smoke coming out the tranny dipstick hole and it wouldn't even shift out of park. Where'd you get the 305 from? Not trying to scare ya, but that just don't sound good.

WEll I got the 305 from this speed shop, it's an AC Delco Remanufactured unit...Umm It's brand new no miles on it, but my tranny had a leak when i brought it to the shop before I had the engine done, I did'nt start it for long maybe a couple of seconds I was thinking maybe my Tranny seized up, because when i smelt the burning it smelt like burnt Rubber or burnt plastic and the engine cut out,.I have'nt started it since, but there's is a pool of tranny fluid in my garage. red fluid's tranny right

Yeah, tranny fluid is red. Just how low is it? Mine wasn't even on the dipstick, took about 3 qts to even get it to read. Did the engine ever start, or did it just crank? (There's oil in it, right?) It could be something electrical hooked up wrong that melted, or maybe your starter grinding. Just a few ideas.
You're probably afraid to try, but does it do anything now? Another quick thing to check, get a breaker bar and a 5/8 socket and try turning the engine by hand at the harmonic balancer bolt. It should be difficult but you ought to be able to get it to move. And take a look at the wires coming off your starter, see if any of them are baked.

Alright well the car does turn over and starts but when i starting it this time, it ran for about 6 seconds then I heard a grinding definatly from the tranny this time and there was lil bit of smoke coming from the rear of the tranny between the driveshaft and the tranny....it was kind of a white smoke, but not alot just a little hint to me i guess.... Oh well time for new tranny time

Well, if the transmission worked perfectly fine before the new engine was stabbed, it is unlikely that it destroyed itself while having the engine swapped. While starting the engine with the trans low on fluid is not a good idea, it really shouldn't toast the entire box if it is just low a few quarts. Now, if it was really low on fluid and you started trying to drive it a bunch, that tends to do some damage in a hurry.....
It is really hard to say without being there, but it sounds like you may have a problem with the flywheel vs. torque converter mating, or the torque converter vs. front pump of the trans mating. I would take off the inspection cover and make sure the converter is completely seated into the front pump of the trans as well as check on the mounting of the flywheel to the torque converter for any problems. Loud grinding with the trans in park (I am assuming you had the trans in park) and the engine idling just doesn't sound right to me......
And the fluid on the ground just doesn't jive to me either, unless the torque converter isn't fully seated into the front pump. In that case, that would be the source of all of your problems. But you really need to find exactly where the fluid is coming from. Did you have the cooler lines off the radiator during the engine swap? If so, have they been reinstalled?
Well, there's some ideas for ya......

Cloud, did you ever take the torque converter off the tranny?
And Matt, if the tc wasn't seated in the pump how could it bolt to the flywheel/flexplate and still have the bellhousing mate up to the back of the block correctly? I can't figure it out but I know it can be done because I've seen a guy ruin his tranny that way. Just curious because I'm always paranoid about not getting the tc on all the way.
Continuing the non-tech:
Cloud was kinda a goody-goody. Besides, Sephiroth's sword was l-o-n-g-e-rrrr.
Azure, you're wrong. Sephiroth was the hottest by far. C'mon ladies, back me up here. Ladies??? (and the 3 other girls on the bb are thinking huh? what? Who?)
In answer to your question, yeah, I think most of the people on this board are about your age. Seems like a lot of highschool and college guys around here.

That's cool, I was told it's not the meat it's the motion...lol. any how no I have'nt takin the Converter Off, nor have i even played with the tranny, but I'm gonna check because It seems I have some kind of little bit of oil leak, from the tranny dripping down, but I'm gonna pull the cover off and check it out and get a flash light and check around.

lol oh it's kinda an inside joke... but that's a good point I'm gonna try looking for that tommorrow and post anything I've found, I just ordered a new transmission a basically new stock one with a vette servo, mega valve, and 3-4 kickdown, But I'm still hoping to salvage the old one and get some money out of it..

Matt, thanks about the tc, exactly what I needed to know. And I've only stabbed 4 engines, 3 auto, so I'm still paranoid. Guess I know how to check it now.
