'77 350 motor?

ok, i just recently found my engine code located on the passenger side in front of my valve cover. the number is V0404CLD. im not sure if they are zeros or o's, but all the sites i look at say the last 3 numbers/letters tell you what it is. well when i looked it up it says its a 1977 350 vette engine. that HAS to be wrong, because i don't think that adds up at all... can someone help me out with this dilemma?! im so confused.

to clarify, where did you get your casting number from?

I use this place to find all my casting nubers and it has never let me down:

The "CLD" was indeed a L82 350 vette motor.

It was in both 73 and 77 vettes, pushing 250HP in '73 and a wimpy 210HP in '77.

Looks to me like a #4 code off of the front of the block, just infront of the heads mating surface.

right, in that diagram it was number 4. in front of the valve cover on the passenger side, just below the air compressor.
