my maro smells like FUEL
my maro smells like FUEL
Ok, so I have a 92 RS... and my car smells like gas. This has been going on for about a month (I only drive it about 5 miles a day, so I just deal with the smell). Before that, my car smelled like exhaust for about a month, but I got that fixed and immediately smelled fuel. It smells INSIDE the car, and it gets worse when the heater is on. The car is starting fine, and running perfectly, but there is a horrible fuel smell and I'm getting very low gas mileage (something like 6 mpg). Please help! I like driving my car, but I don't want to die.
Thanks!!

That lousy of mileage makes me think leak or severe sensor degradation.
Check the TBI gasket for getting sucked inot the engine.
Also check for obvious fuel line leaks, at the tank and at all junctions, the TB, the fuel filter etc.
Next get someone who can test the coolant temp sensor reading for you as well.
Such a huge drop and nasty smell leads me to believe it is somehting fairly obvious.
Short trips also hammer mileage as the car never gets hot enough to go closed loop and/or leanring process.
Plugged converter can also cause weird issues, does the car still move relaitively well?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Sounds to me like you have a pin hole in a fuel line.
Drive the car for a while, pull it up onto ramps and park it; then get under it and closely examine the fuel lines all the way from the tank to the motor, and see if you can spot any fuel anywhere.

a cigarette lighter finds gas leaks relatively easy. Check for corrosion along the fuel lines. Does it do it all the time? or intermittently? make sure you're not overfilling and filling up the evap.
Ok I'll try to answer some of it now... yes, the car still moves really good. I'm not having any problems with it other than the smell and the mileage... there is nothing out of the ordinary, and yes, it does it all the time... well, when it's running, I mean. Thanks for the help... I'll get working on the maro later today and see what works and what doesnt. Thanks!
