I have a rebuilt 305 with the oil pan off and heads installed. How do I install the distributor? Where do I place the rotor pointing towards? It looks as though the first cylinder on the right from the front of the engine is at the top of its stroke by looking at it from the underside. The dots on the timing chaing gear and crank gear are both at the 12 o'clock position. I can post photo's if this would help. thanks for hte help guys

Sounds like you've done the hard part. If it is indeed at tdc on #1 (the clinder you described), Then install the distributor with the rotor pointing towards #1.

Check your timing chain box (instructions). Most (not all) timing gears should have the top (cam) gear dot at 6:00 and the crank gear at 12:00. This will put the piston at tdc on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. Then set you dizz in pointing towards #1 which is the cylinder you described.
No timing chain cover but I can look up the part number and manufacturer on my billing invoice. I will post more tomorrow afternoon. thanks so far.
