why is my car retarded without knock sensor?

when you have you knock sensor disconnected does it retard your timing as far as possible? because my timing is somthing grater than 20 deg retarded when i hook up my est but without it, when i set my timing it is good and stays at 10 deg advanced. and i cannot figure why it retards my timing, when i unpluge my knock sensor it still acts the same and retards the timing, it has something to do with the est crap and i have replaced the relay with a 87 tpi one but it still the same and messes up. so i am back to the question does the est retard the timing with the knock sensor unpluged or does it just go as if it has not seen any knock and doesnot retard the timing?
here is the chance to prove this is not a nontec board...

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but are you sure you've got advanced/retarded right? Advanced is towards the passenger's side, retarted is to the driver's side.

Yeah that sounds right. you can't just unplug the sensor..it'll screw your timing up.

sorry that was not what i was going for, yea i know what is advance and what is retarding the timing. the thing is that i cant get the timing not retarded. soon as a plug in the est wire it retards the timing atleast 20 deg and never moves up, and i unhooked the knock sensor to see if that was the problem and it doesnt make a difference with the knock sensor hooked up or with it disconected and i KNOW that is messed up that is why i am asking you guys . soon as i pluge the est it automaticly goes way retarded.

another thing is the only reason why it retards the timing becasue it notices knocks, form being to advanced?? right?? if so it should not retard it if the knock sensor is hooked up. but it does

No. The only function of the knock sensor to listen for detonation and tell the ECM that a detonation event has taken place. It does not do any funky things with the timing on its own at all. And if you disconnect it, all you are doing is taking away the 'ears' of the ECM and it will never hear any knock and the timing will never retard.
