The rpms should be lower. If you drive your car in [D], if I recall correctly, should go into OD at 40 mph.

Some people say use overdrive only on the highway. Most leave the shifter in the OD position all the time. The transmission will only shift into overdrive when the RPMs get high enough.
The overdrive position is the D with the circle around it, one notch away from Neutral. If the RPMs increased, it sounds like you downshifted.

there's very little reason NOT to have the car in OD all the time. why would you NOT want to use the top gear cruising in-town at 45mph? is there any down side? better mpg, less noise from the engine...all good.

Actually I thought the same thing all the time I was driving my Dad's Chevys and Mopars, then I went out and did a very stupid thing and bought a Ford T-Bird. For some reason I get no torque off the line when the tranny is in OD. It also upshifts much faster into third from second while cruising.
The only thing I can figure is that somehow Ford has it hooked up so that the ECU can detect that it's in OD rather than D, and adjusts accordingly.
In any case, I'm driving around town in D until I can find a suitable replacement, almost certainly a third-gen Camaro.

The only possible downside from using OD is if your in a city where its constantly 40, 35, 50, 40. It overworks the transmission..
