ok lets figure this out...

ok my car...Slp Take off* Richmond Gears 3.42
*79 350 4-bolt .040 : 9.25:1 or so comp.
Vortec Heads
xe262h (stock springs, stamped rockers)
performer RPM intake
Holley 700dp
2055 hooker into aerochamber
t56
14.5@99mph w/ 2.33 60'(i know, i know) this was w/out the dist.

I now have a MSD pro-billet dist, blaster 2 coil with it set inital 11deg, all in by 2900rpm 36total. i also have a holley 700dp. im am trying to get my car running correct. it has hesitation when you floor it at any rpm below 2400 or so.. the holley has .69 primaries, and i think .73 sec. i dunno its stock. The pump shot is a .31 which i put in to try to help. my vaccum at idle 800 is 15" which i think is low... i have no hesitation when i bring up the intial to 18or so degrees. but isnt that alittle to high? i just need some info on why its slow and hesitates.

Increase your initial and take away from your centrifugal advance for a total of 36* and try that.

Either that or try going to either one or both weaker springs in the dist. Most people have best luck with one weak and one medium spring.

With that much lobe overlap, high advance like that isn't necessarily irregular, especially with the moderate compression ratio. Whatever floates your boat and gets you running.

Just for grins, what power valve (vacuum rating) is installed?

i have the medium and weak spring in it, and the power valve is the stock i think 6.5? what all does intial advance to besides make the starter work harder?

The brake booster is leaking.

your cars performance is way off. Should be mid 13's@103-105mph.

Start with a compression test. regap the spark plugs .035"
get a accelerator pump tuning kit (shooters and cams)

the distributor should have come with a few advance limiter bushings. These bushings will limit the advance travel, allowing more initial at idle. Use as much initial as your starter will witstand and still kick over ok.

as long as you don't get detonation, advancing your timing shouldn't affect mpg

ignore the stock settings and set your timing to what your car likes, regardless of what you feel is high or not

advance until it pings slightly under load (actually drive it, dont just throttle it) and then back it off a couple degrees until detonation stops completely under load
