318 k LO3

My 89 Bird got 318k with the original LO3 305 TBI engine . Would it be better to swap it for another one or should I rebuild mine . I'm planning a cam swap and new heads for this babe so.....

Congratulations. At this point its I would go with either a fresh re-build or a very mild 350. If u can get 350 and a transmission it would be the best option.

I personaly would re-build it and get some good heads on it and NOS it!

I think it all depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want it as a dailyy driver? Or do you want it for a weekend drag car? Honestly I would just look for a 350 and some exhaust mods, You'll get a lot more power off a 350 rather than a 305. To get that 305 running like a 350 will probabbly rack up the cash.

Good Luck

If it were me, I would either get a GM crate engine or find a 350 with some good heads to put on it. But, since you already plan to do heads, I would do them on a 350 instead of a 305. More options with the heads that way. Bigger bore. But that is just my .02.

I say you look into the new research done on making power with the L03 on the TBI board. Depending on how much of a DIY'er you are its possible you can make a good ammount of power for fairly cheap. People are now running intake manifolds for carb's with a TBI adapter on top and open element air filter. I think the most supprising thing is the results from the flow tests people have done with the L03 heads and porting. With the right intake manifold, cam, porting, and re-tuning of the ECM people are making good power numbers for fairly cheap. This was news to me as I've always considered the L03's to be lame, apparently I was wrong (as were many others). I'm not saying this is gonna be better than a 350, no doubt the 350 will make more power. All depends on what you can spend.

I inhereted a lo3 in my project car and it is getting bolted back together with a LT4 Hot Cam and ported 416 heads. Should run much stronger now and Im also switching to a holley 750. Going to have a 3000 stall with a th350 and 4.10s out back. I havent seen anyone run the Hot cam in a 305 yet, but if someone has let me know how it did.
