Shopping list for valve seal replacement?

I'm about to change my valve seals. I've never done this type of work before. Actually, I've never even had to pull a valve cover off. I feel confident in my abilities though, and I hope to save some money doing this myself. The car is a 91 Camaro RS, 305 TBI, A4. I would appreciate it if somebody could make a list for me of the things I will need to buy to go the job. Thanks alot

Basic handtools.

If you are going to use compressed air to hold the valve you will need the adapter to screw into the block. Otherwise you need to make sure you have some rope to use.

Need one of these to compress the valve spring so you can get the valve "keepers" off.

I would put a fresh set of valve springs on it while they're off. After 15 years and who knows how many miles, they're bound to be tired. Just a stock set will get you by so it wont break the bank.

I recommend these seals for both intake and exhaust:

Probably need one of these to rotate the engine.

Rope or air hold plug.

Rags.

Eye protection.

Valve spring shims so you can lose some weight on the valve train like the splash shield and the rotator on the exhaust valve.

for all the details.

might be a stupid question but, is it possible to do the seals following the firing order of the engine? so no rope or air is necessary but instead the piston being at TDC would keep the valve from dropping?

no the valve will still drop into the cylinder a bit because of clearances. You really need to do the compressed air or rope trick honestly.

I will probably go ahead and do a whole valve job. Can somebody recommend a decent set of valves? Thanks again!

Keep your stock valves unless they are damaged. You will have to pull the head it you want to do a valve job. This will require more time and the cost of head gaskets. Not a big deal really. On a LO3 the compressed air method doesn't work so well. It is hard to get the air line and spark plug fitting into the head with the heads on the car. There is too much stuff in the way. The rope method is easier and is faster. Refer to this thread for some tips on seal replacement on an LO3. You will have to scroll past all the cam stuff first.
