thrust bearing

dumb question, where does the thrust bearing for the cam go? between the retainer and the gear drive, or the retainer and the cam?

Are you adding a Torrington roller thrust bearing, or asking about a shim type bearing?

ON the older design blocks (non-roller) you can install a timing set with a roller thrust bearing to minimize friction from the axial loading of the cam. I have not seen one of these for a roller block. A plain bronze washer would be fit between the retainer and rear of the cam sprocket to take up the thrust loading from the cam trying to pull itself into the engine as a result of driving the oil pump and distributor. You may have to machine the rear face of the cam sprocket to provide clearance.

If it's the same gear drive you'd want it between the cam drive and the retainer.

The rear of the cam drive would make it's presence known on the retainer (wear it away) more-so than the cam on the retainer.

It may have been there to straighten out the alignment for some odd reason or another.
