Ignition module replacement

Yo guys, I think the 8 pin module in my dizzy has seen it's better days. Can it be replaced with the diz still in the engine, or do I have to pull it? TIA.

No need to pull out the Dizzy. If you disconnect the spark plug wires be sure to label them.

It can be done in the car. Be sure to use new silicone paste that is included with most replacement modules.

Thanks for the info guys, glad to hear I don't have to pull the dizzy.

Yeah, I know about the silicone heatsink compound. Actually, I'll use some of the silver-loaded heatsink grease I use for computer CPU heatsinking since it conducts heat better than the plain stuff.

But what about the module itself? A new Delco D1990 module costs like $80 or so from the local dealer. I can get a new Pertronix module from Summit for under $50. Will the Pertronix module last?

TIA.

Thanks guys. the new module was indeed the fix for my cutting-out problem. I put in a new Pertronix D2002 module, fired it up and took a drive. No more problems, I guess the old stock module had sparked it's last. And yes, replacement of the module with the diz in the car was no problem at all. Instead of the clear silicone gel that Pertronix supplied, I instead used Artic Silver heatsink compound, which has higher thermal conductivity, it's used on computer CPUs between the chip and the heatsink/fan. Anyway, thanks again to the experts on TGO to help me solve the problem with my motor.
