fuel pump question

I just hooked my fuel pump up to a aftermarket relay and a toggle switch. The pump hasn't ran in about 3 years so, i just put a hose on the line and let it run to get all of the old gas out. My question is with the pump running and no regulator, should it be a really fast, heavy stream of gas or not. Mine seemed like it didn't have much pressure to it. The car is a 85 iroc that had TPI. Im still using the stock intank.
Thanks Mike

A stock TPI pump should flow a minimum about one pint in 15 seconds to be considered "good". At that rate, to empty a 16 gallon tank would take over half an hour.

Of course, with nothing to restrict the output flow, there will be almost no pressure. FLOW is what you should be considering, not pressure.

Fuel filter may be getting plugged if it's been on there a long time.

In order to determine that, you'll have to test the output flow at rated pressure. That can be a little more tricky. That would involve removing the return line from the regulator and metering flow there. Since you should now have a regulator mounted somewhere to reduce pressure to something more like 4-5 PSI, accessing the return line should be easier. If the pump will flow a pint in approximately 11.3 seconds at regulated pressure, it should feed a decent flowing 438 inch engine at 13:1 up to 6,000 RPM. That's the rough equivalent of the fuel flow needed to produce 500HP.
