I am about to order a gear drive for my cam, and bring back my edelbrock timing set to autozone.

so please explain to me how loud "loud" really is.

from 1-10,
1 being low on power steering fluid whine.
10 being a gear driven centrifugal blower.

 

I WOULD say 8 there pretty dam loud

 

some are louder than others. Plan on 4-6 based on your scale. Why don't you put a good chain on it?

 

cause i want the gear drive sound, for when i get my roots blower, i hear both combined make a super awesome sound.

but i want loud, but a buddy of mine said it was like horendously loud.... i think he was just jealous that i was gettigna gear drive and he;s stuck with a cloyed chain.... hehe...

 

beleave me it gets annoying after abit speaicaly driving on the highway.

 

my car has 2 layers of dyno matt all the way around, i dont think i can hear a thing. Atleast i coudln't before, this wont be too loud.

I haven't fired mine up yet to get a comparrison. With open headers giving a rating of about 25 on your scale I probably wouldn't even hear the gears. Some Magnaflow race mufflers are going on soon to hopefully bring the exhaust noise down to about a 15 rating. Exhaust should be about 95 decibles with the new mufflers. Right now I'd guess it's well over 100 decibles. I need ear plugs in the car when I fire it up

As mentioned above, the noise may sound cool a first but for a street car, the novelty wears off fast especially if you have a noisy gear set.

It all depends on your standards. My 454SS truck has dual Hooker Aerochamber mufflers. It has a nice rumble sound and I need to turn up the radio at highway speeds. The sound gets a little annoying but I've gotten used to it. It helps to be partially deaf in one ear.

 

I guess you totally missed the point. I noticed your other post, trying to do everything you can to pick up every little bit of power you can... and then you throw a gear drive in there. Hrm. Not exactly the path I'd take, get a good double roller chain. Even if you want to argue about it, its going to take less power to drive the chain than the gear.

You'll hear it at idle, doesnt matter how well your windows seal or how much dynamat you have. Only a stereo is going to drown it out. I know, I have one. PJ 'quiet', and its not quiet unless you're stone deaf. lol.

If you want to talk about R words, R42TS. Whats the R for?

Willie (also runs a PJ quiet) from here says his is quieter than this, but who knows. Its a recording, maybe it just sounds quieter to him or this sounds like its louder.

 

well, picking up every little but here ant there is the goal, b ut a gear drive is something i have always wanted for the strength the acuuracy and the noise!


soon enough i'll be adding a blower anyways, and a 150shot, so i'm pretty surei will be able to deal with this. The weinand 177 blower is what i am lookin at, but might go larger.

 

I'm not trying to get involved in any disagreements or anything but I would be interested in seeing dyno sheets or reading personal experiences regarding a loss in power when running a gear drive compared to a chain (both with the cam degree'd the same).

 

I wouldn't reccomend using a gear drive. Not because IMO they are annoying, its your car and you can do what you want, but they don't absorb crankshaft harmontics like a chain does, and that can cause damage over time to the valvetrain. The valvetrain will wear out much faster with a gear drive. The gear drive also isn't anymore accurate or stonger than a good quality double roller chain with steel gears.

 

Dude wants a grear drive, let him put one in. Wether i agree or not, it's his car, not mine. HP gain/loss will not be noticable anywhere but on the dyno. I've heard about harmonic tranfer to the cam, spark scatter, longevity issues, etc. but it's always been second ha. No one has yet showed scientific data to prove that any problems were caused specifically by the gear drive. He seems like he's primarily after the noise anyway.

 

well it does make that noise by having straight cut teeth hitting each other right? so I'm assuming this is going to make some sort of vibration

BTW, it's been dyno proven with the *better* gear drives that there is NO HP loss.

I personally like the whine. Inside the car while driving i can barrely hear it, the Flow 40's cover it up nicely

 

If you're going with a blower anyway, why not run a belt drive?

 

buddy of mine has a pj noisy.. it's pretty damn loud, you can hear his gear drive before you hear the car and it's a built 406.

ok something a buddy of mine suggested was to get a nice thick timing cover, maybe to tone it down a bit. What cover would do this, but not break my budget? I already have a "stamped" steel chrome cover. But i guess as long as its not too expensive i can get it no problem.

i got my gear drive in today...

I ordered the "Pro Comp 'Loud' Gear Drive." Was $68 shipped and i have a buddy who said they made good stuff, so i am using it. I also ordered a 2 piece timing cover so i can remove it of the need be.

 

My brother had some of the loudest ones on his 81 Camaro, sounded like a freaking jet taking off lol

 

TO bad there isn't a was to isolate the gears and pack them with grease. It would really cut the noise down.

Listened to the first sound clip so far, irritating, annoying, to my ears.

BUT, like already said, some people like it, let them have it.

Some people wouldn't like my muffler install (Thrush Magnum perforated glasspack with a turndown tip). You hear and feel it underneath the car.
