Hi guys,

I'm looking at doing some mods to my GTA this summer, & I'm wondering which way I want to go. First, I'm fairly certain that I'm going to upgrade to a 4th gen rear (since my current 9-bolt has limited gearset availability). Anyone have a rough idea what they're going for in junkyards?

Also, I'm thinking of bumping my L98 up to a 383, but I'd like to get a rough idea of how much I'd be looking at for block machining, as well as associated costs like pressing pins onto rods/pistons, etc. I might just decide to drive the car this summer, & put that off until winter...

Finally, what's a rough idea of what I'd pay for an L98 (roller) block, if I decided to build a 2nd short-block while driving it this summer?

Thanks guys!

I have a 10 bolt in my 87 Trans Am that has drum breaks, a Jeg's support cover w/bearing supports, 28 spline Moser alloy axles, posi and a 3.73 gear that I am going to be selling in the near future. It has 150 miles on the new gear and a complete overhaul. Email me if interested.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm hoping that I don't have to mess w/ the brakes too much (I currently have 4-wheel discs), and I can't imagine that shipping on a rear would be very cheap... I'm also hoping that I can do this swap fairly inexpensively, & it sounds like you've got some good parts there. Thanks though!

Yup you are right about making the disk brakes fit. I think it can be done (not sure though) but it would require some machine work. Buy the time you paid for the S&H, and brake work, geesh, it wouldn't be worth it I guess.

Depends on the JY and condition of the rear, i'd say $200 is a decent price to pay.

figure on bore/hone to clean up the walls, perhaps align hone, deck, etc. maybe $1000 block machining, max. Unless you go all out for a race type motor or something. Parts? Depends on quality desired, look at summit for "383 rotating assemblies". I think you can get one for $1k or so, cast crank, forged rods, hyper pistons. (heck, probably a fair bit less then that...)

Roller block? hmm, more then the typical $50 SBC. Figure $200-300 for a rebuildable core. Guessing on prices in your neck of the woods, and based on your luck, is very hard to do. Try calling around, call a machine shop and ask their prices on cores and machine work, and browse summit for parts.
