Flat Tappet - Cam Button or Not?

I've searched and found that some people say a cam button isn't needed with a flat tappet and some say they put in it anyways just to be safe. I have a cloyes timing cover with the roller cam button in it. It is going to hurt anything if I put it in with a flat tappet cam or doesn't it matter?

No it is not necessary.

There are hundreds of millions of engines of all makes models sizes ages and nationalities running all over the world, with flat tappet cams and no button. It is not necessary.

If the cover in question is a 9-221, set the button thing to about .015" - 020" of clearance; about ¼ - ½ turn backed out from just contacting the cam nose.
