383 Stroker

Okay, here is goes. I have myself a 350 4 bolt and it's going to the shop soon to get clearanced and bored to build a 383, but I need some help. I know these questions have been asked a million times, but I'd like to get a little more specific. First off, I want to make about 450 to 500 hp. I have been looking around for heads & a cam, but the rest I have found. I am using a SCAT 3.75 Crank, Eagle H beam rods, Weiand Team G intake, 750 CFM Holley Carb, etc. My question is what cam and lifters should I get? I want one that has a very crazy, lopey idle. I'm not concered about vacuum because I can get a canister to provide the brakes with adequate vacuum. If you can recommend a cam please do and give me the entire cam specs. If you have a weblink to a specific camshaft please provide it also. If you know what cam and head combinations would be good to make 450 to 500 HP please add that as well. I don't want a good idle, I want a very lopey idle. Also, which should I get hydraulic Flat, solid flat, hydraulic roller or solid roller. I know the solid rollers are the best, but probably not as good for a car that will be driven on the streets on weekends. Thanks a lot for everyone's input.

If you plan on doing lots of street driving I would go with a hydraulic roller. You can easily make 450-500hp with a hyd/roller if you have the parts matched up well. I was running a comp hyd.roller XR294HR 242/248dur@.05 .540/.562lift and ran mid 11's. With a cam like this his you need some good flowing heads, good exhaust system, 3000-4000stall, 3.73-4.11 gears and 10:1-10.5:1 compression for use with 92-93 octane pump gas. I was using Dart Pro 1's(mildly ported) and a 750DP carb. Very lopy idle at about 750RPM's and had enough vacuum to run power brakes with the canister. Very good cam for a weekend cruiser (street/strip) car but I wouldn't go that radical with a daily driver. And you will probably have to do a little carb tuning to get it tuned they way you want(power valve, larger squirters, drilled throttle blades). If you want any more specifics about my old combo feel free to send me a PM. For cam recommendations I always suggest calling several cam manufactures to see what they suggest.

AFR CNC'd 195's with Comps 236/242 grind in a hydraulic roller. RPM Air Gap intake and 750 carb. Made 515hp/545tq on pump gas. Also had 5.7" rods. He drives it to work whenever the weather is nice (60 miles round trip) and the car weighs 3200lbs runs 11.50's in the heat.

Wow, you two got some good hp numbers. I will drive it on weekends on the street, but I will mostly use it for strip. Jbenge, what was the lobe seperation on that comp cam you spoke of. I will def. be getting a hydraluic roller, but so far I haven't found a company to buy from. Keep the ideas coming, thanks.

Have you called the Comp Tech Help line? They can be very helpful. Don't be surprised if you get a female on the line. She still has a pretty good clue about the subject.

110° is about what I'm looking for. Please recommend a camshaft manufacturer. I just want to know what people think about certain cam companies. Thank you.

I use ISKY for all of our custom grinds and Comp for off-the-shelf parts.

I haven't heard of ISKY, but I know COMP is very popular.
