Can it be done with a tow bar? Will having the wheels on the ground hurt anything?
I know I would be better off with a trailer, but that is a lot more expensive.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Just take the drive shaft out. Leave it plugged into the trans to keep the fluid in, and tied up SECURELY to the tunnel, above and to the side of the rear end so it doesn't hit the rear end yoke which will of course be spinning.
I agree with the above but i would strongly reccomend disconnecting the driveshaft completely. Leavin it loose is just looking for problems. If your concerned with fluid loss just plug the hole

Sounds like a good idea... now I just need to find an old yoke to plug the tranny hole with.

In the past I've pulled the drive shaft out and let the oil run into a container. When it stops, I'll take a heavy duty plastic bag and place it over the tail shaft, securing it in place with large rubber bands.

You could always pull the driveshaft and knok the yolk off of it and somehow secure that to the trans, then you dont have a biga$$ driveshaft waiitng to fall out!
Or go to the junkyard and chop a yolk off if you dont want to take your driveshaft apart.

you can get a spare yoke at a junkyard for like 5 bucks tops.. thats your best bet, or you could get a plug, new trans's are shipped with plugs in em.. not sure where to buy em though.. you could try your local trans shop see if they have any laying around.. might even give ya it free.
