Couple of Questions (Trunk/AC)

The power trunk motor died, I took it in to get checked over/replaced but was told it would be 600 dollars just for the part and then whatever labor to get it in.

I love the car and I have 600.00 but I -hate- the damn trunk motor in the first place and spending 600.00 on a feature I don't like seemed dumb. So the question is, is there anyway at all to make the trunk operate normally, without a motor? I'd very much like to just remove the motor and put in a normal trunk lock. Otherwise I will have to scour the junkyards for a working one in a junker.

And the A/C is being quite strange. I asked them to look it over when I had it in the shop for the trunk thing but they didn't do that apparently. When the AC is on the car becomes both very loud and has this strange pattern of making a loud hum, then pausing a moment, then humming anytime we are stopped. It does not do this when we are moving only when idling at say a light.

It also causes the rpms to shift up and down when it does this. It did not do it before, and the air does blow cold, and air does blow, it just seems to be acting funky.

I had a 91 RS that I swapped the T-5 for an auto, it had the lock on the hatch w/o the motor madness. That is the only one I have ever seen with the lock, they are out there but not easy finding.

Your A/C compressor may need A/C oil or it may be low on freon, enough to when you idle its not getting enough pressure to keep the sensor active. When the A/C does not have enough freon in the system the clutch on the compressor will kick in and out, and your idle will adjust with the A/C compressor engaged or disengaged.

You can figure out exactly where the two parts that the motor move need to be when the trunk is closed - mark those two plates, and have holes drilled through them, put bolts in, and put back in the trunk. That way, the trunk closes where it needs to be, and you can adjust it somewhat with the rubber bumpers to get a tight fit - I'd fit it tight, then adjust the bumpers outwards to make it tighter - otherwise you'd have a squeek. I did this on my 1990 RS when the trunk motor died.

Hatch motors can be gotten here in the parts 4 sale section for like $40 - $50 bucks as well.
