Could incorrect O2 foul plugs ??

I installed an Auto Zone O2 sensor 3 months ago, and car has ran like crap since..A friend connected his obd1 and said car is not going into closed loop, recommended new O2 (ac delco not AZ).
I changed it and car idles much smoother now...
My question is..could that incorrect o2 sensor have fouled my plugs, and should I replace them also???

I would, it could cause your car to run rich, giving you soot and crap on your plugs. Just a little bit of insurance for a small price.
