Where is a good place to buy a 383 short block kit???
Well guys, I'm in the market for a new engine, and I have been thinking about it long and hard. Since my motor is now wasted(If you haven't read the post, you can see it here...), I think that it is time to step up to a little more power.

I am pretty much deciding on going with a 383 stroker to replace it. There are only a few isues that I have.
1. Time- I don't have any problem buying all the parts seperate, but I WON'T build the short block myself, so I would have a machine shop do it. All that takes a lot of time to recieve parts/have it assembled.
2. Money- Buying a complete short block would be a faster method, but so far all of the engines I have looked at are in the $2500-$3000 and up range and I can't drop that kind of cheese at one time.
3. Engine internals- Seeing what happened with my old motor using factory GM X rods with the ARP rod bolts, cast crank and flat top hypereutectic pistons, I am MAJORLY leaning towards going with all forged internals. Unfortunatly, this drives the cost up even more but at the same time offers more reliability/peace of mind.
4. Ability to swap over my existing parts- Most of the 383 short blocks that I have seen were built for the 1 piece rear main seal. My block is a 2 piece rear main seal, and the oil pan is designed to fit the 2 piece specifically, and also designed to fit in the f body chassis.
In reality, what I am expecting out of this engine is not that bad. I would like about 450-500 HP and around 475-525 TQ without having to spin the motor past 6000 RPM(which is easily attainable from almost every website/article that I have read) I understand that alot of the power comes from the compression ratio/camshaft selection/cylinder head configuration and flow ratings. What would you suggest? I was currently running the complete Edelbrock Performer RPM package. The cylinder heads were 64cc chambers with 2.02/1.60 valves, Performer RPM Air Gap intake manifold and running the RPM camshaft and lifters (I .488 E. 510 @ I 234* E 244*). Compression ratio was probably at about 9.75:1-9.8:1. This combo makes 420HP and 425TQ on 9.5:1 compression. What do you think that it would pull if Iused that setup on the 383? I'm not against using other brands either, so hit my with every suggestion that you got! Thanks, Paul Moore

I have a Competition Products catalog that has a Wheeler 383 short block with forged pistons (flat or dome) and crank, fully assembled and balanced for $2499.95 Damn good deal if you ask me.
The part number is CSB383FL4CT
It's not showing up on their website though. Although not much does. Their website doesn't seem to be a high priority to them.
Had I seen that 2 yrs ago....

As AJ_92RS said, Competition Products' website leaves something to be desired.
They are however my favorite place to get internal engine components. Great selection, really good prices, and alot of kits as well as raw parts. They will work with you to modify a kit to your needs as well.
Have them send you a catalog (trust me, the catalog is MUCH more helpful than the website), the selection of parts in it is much better than Jegs or Summit (at least as far as internal engine components)
Their number is 1-800-233-0199 and they are located at 280 W. 35th Ave, Oshkosh, WI 54902-7173.
