083 HEAD ASSEMBLY ?
ok, ready to install springs on a set of cast iron 083 heads. got 2 more questions.
1. have obtained my installed spring height, but when i add proper shim they put the base of the spring above or right at the top of the spring seat. is this ok ? (shims .06 on intake & .12 on exhaust.)
2. is it normal that all the exhaust spring seats are cut .05 lower than the intake from the factory ? like they wanted different spring pressures on exhaust than intake ?
thanks, im trying to learn head building so all educated advise will be much appriciated.

1. I don't like that one bit. That could allow the spring to dance around on the head. Check the inner dia of the springs you're using; if they fit tight to the guide, within .030" or less, they'll probably be OK. If not, use some of these, such as part # 4695, and find the ones with the right ID and OD for the springs you're using. Another trick would be to use offset keepers, that REDUCE the installed height, instead of INCREASING it; such as Manley 13081.
2. The reason they're like that, is that the factory uses those stupid useless "rotators" on the exhaust valves. I & E use the same spring, but the exhaust has that big heavy extra thing on top of it, so they cut the pocket deeper.
