Installing New Starter

I have to put a new starter in my car. I have disconnected the wires from the old starter and have removed the bolts that hold it in place. The thing now just sits there on an exhaust pipe and I can't get it out. Do I have to remove the exhaust pipe or is there some secret I'm not aware of to get this thing out of there?

My car is a 1988 305 automatic.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
some secret I'm not aware of to get this thing out of there

It has to be turned up on end, with the solenoid toward the rear of the car (I think...), with the nose down.

It helps if you speak to it loudly in its own language too. Just not so loud that the neighbors think there's a brawl in progress.
