Cam/timing set degree question
Alright, I'm going crazy right now because I can't remember timing positions for the life of me, serious brain fart. Anyway, A typical cam has about 4* advance ground into it for a typical SBC. Now the timing set I have has the three typical settings on the crank gear. 4* retarded, 0* (straight up dot to dot), or 4* advanced. If the cam with the supposed 4* advance ground in is matched with the timing set with the marks for straight up will it still be 4* advance when degreeing the cam? Or if it is installed with the 4* advance setting on the crank gear will it show up 8* advance when degreeing? AHHH help please, this seems so trivial.
if i understand what you're asking, if you set the timing set dot to dot, or straight up it'll be straight up, plus the cam will have 4* advance ground into it. do worry too much about the additional 4* ground into the cam and don't add it to whatever timing you decide to run.

Thanks for the response ede.
Well, the cam definitely doesn't have the advance I was hoping for in it. I was kinda second guessing myself with the crank gear install. I double checked it and I did install everything "straight up". However, the cam's about 6* retarded, which is kinda much, but I got some bushings to bring it back to the correct intake centerline. So I'll try one of those and degree it again.
