Stalls sometime...

About half of the time when I start my car, it starts right up and then immediately dies. I have to press on the gas pedal to keep the rpm's hign enough so it won't stall. If I let off the pedal the rpm's drop below 400 and it stalls. The other half of the time it starts right up and idles between 1000 and 1500 rpm's. It doesn't matter wether it's hot or cold and there doesn't appear to be any type of pattern. I never know when I go to start the car in the morning what its going to do that day. Any ideas?

Car: '83 T/A
Engine: 355
Transmission: BW T5
Axle/Gears: BW 3.27
Some more info is needed.

What type of car, engine?
Carbed or FI?
Does this happen during cold starts, or warm starts or both?
