Vortec Rockers

I know that this has probably been covered somewhere before but i can't seem to find it so i thought that i would ask. What are the reasons for the self-aligning rocker arms on vortec heads? I thought that i had read somewhere that if you switched over to a aftermarket screw in stud that they were no longer necessary. Is this right?

Thanks!!!

i switched to screw in studs and then used guideplates along with non-self aligning aka "normal" rockers
