Noise from front of block

89 305 TBI.
Over the last few weeks , I have heard a random light tapping noise. It has now become a constant noise that is loud. The noise increases with engine speed. I have probed the accessories with a long screwdriver against the ear, and they sound smooth. It sounds louder from the passenger side fender than driver side. Because of time I have been limited on my search for the problem.
Any suggestions?

Remove the serp belt and start it up. If the noise goes away, it's an accessory. If it is still there, it's not an accessory and is probably a bearing.

i guess I could try that. So what will happen if it is a main bearing, and it fails?
