Argh! Help with 350 rebuilt engine purchase please

Been dealing with city motor supply for a rebuilt 350 for a 1991 TPI. I have the 305 and its getting junked for a 5.7L. I've made several phone calls to these guys and they never seem to know anything.

I ask them about cam specs and they say..."oh..its stock". And dont give me any details. The one guy I asked about specs gave me numbers for a 305 cam.

I asked about heads....he gave me 4 different casting #'s; none of which were #083. "oh the 193 heads are the same as the 083 heads". I told him those were tbi swirl port castings and he says, oh its ust whatever came stock, but they might have some 083 castings laying around.

I'm starting to think that I shouldnt be looking at these huge engine rebuilding warehouses at all. Seems that no body knows any specifics and will try and give you a fine working motor with whatever stock parts will work.

Any suggestions before I start calling around again?

well i wouldnt exactly expect them to know every single engine combo that GM made...

for just one year GM probably used 10 different heads and 10 different cams on 350s.

By the sounds of it you should get a list of the head castings you want and the cast number for the cam (if you was a stock one) then phone them. Then they can tell you yes/no they got it.

i thought all tpi 350's had #083 heads. Were there other castings used on these motors from 87-92 with centerbolt valve covers
