yeah, that reminds me, i did have one more injury, it happened during the walk to the car tho...
I was wlaking to my car one day to start degreesing the engine bay, and all the sudden i felt a sharp pain in the heel of my foot. Didn't think nothing of it except something in my shoe, cause i had shoes on, nails or screws cant go through shoes right!!!??? Wrong!!!!!
I got to my car and picked my foot up to take my shoe off, i couldn't, another sharp pain stopped me from continuing to remove, looked at the bottom of my shoe and there was a screw head in my shoe, i tried to remove my foot again, pain.
SO i found the closest screw driver, on the car hidden, there always never there when you need them, but when you dont, you have too many screw drivers...
I unscrewed the nearly 2" long screw from my foot and then took my foot off!
anyone have any idea what it feels like to unscrew a carpentry screw 1" out of your foot?
i have a photo!
looked worse in person!

I didn't have any fingerprints for like a week one time. I coulda robbed a bank or something.
oh yeah bring that up....
I had a bad carb backfire in my old 350, and my edelbrock triangle filter POS caught fire...
I have the grid from my old edelbrock triangle filter, burned into my right thumb. for 9 months my finger was really tuff, like rigid, but lately its been getting softer with lotion, yet i still have the grid burned into my fingerprint.
I cant wait till the day i am fingerprinted and the gujy looks at my thumb print like its a message from god. Doc said its scard and if it didn't go away yet, it never will...
i have lots of stories, just keep bringing up yours and i'll remember them....

I heard about one guy once who was trying to troubleshoot his carb. and had the car running at the time. ended up looking down the carb gave it some gas and it backfired through the carb.... into his eye.
guy only has sight in one eye right now.
though I know someone once who swapped a rear end and driveshaft out of a car one time without using jackstands. story goes something like was driving on a dirt track once getting some practice in and the front u-joint broke dug into the ground and flipped the car up on it's roof. he figured it would just be easier to sit there and fix the car where it sat on it's roof then flip it over, jack it up and then go from there. said it took a little getting used to though working on the car like that.

Rx7Speed,
It was horrifying but surprisingly painless. The blade went between the bones in my joint and cut out the ligament between them. Both tendons, and the nerve were also severed. The knife was razor sharp, so it was a clean cut. At first i thought i had slid on the dull side of the blade. It wasnt until i saw my pinky hanging by a piece of skin and saw the bone w/ the severed ligament sticking out of the stump that i got worried. My girlfriend was there with me, and she immediately wrapped it up in a towel and took me to the ER. (at first i was trying to be a tough guy and didnt want to go
) Now its back on, and stiff, but i still have my trigger finger and thats what counts!
By the way, you know a girl truly loves you when she holds your severed apendages for you!

My worst: Hit in the left hand with a propane torch.
Back when i did a full lift on my jeep in HS i had to remove the pitman arm and several buddies were helping out. One of which had experience in using a blow torch so i let him heat up the arm. Right as i am explaining where i need the heat applied(pointing with my hand) he sparks it up and the flame hits my hand.
I quickly pulled my hand away and yelled some obscenties followed by putting my hand in some cold water. I had a 2-3" swell ring on the back of my hand for a few days.

Moderator note: Personally, I don't think this type of thread is in keeping with the Board intent of technical-content-only, but on the off-chance that some wisdom is passed on so that experience isn't the fool's best teacher, I let them slid a little bit. However, when politics get mixed in, and things get personal, I have no choice but to step in. If you've got a non-tech issue with someone, then I'd suggest trading PM's to try to work it out. Don't do it within a thread, please.

i'll do mine a little different, more like some words of wisdom i have learned,... mostly after the fact.
never hold something in your hand when drilling a hole in it. thats one of the things a vise is for, a few trips to the doctor & a good number of years later i can bend that joint on that finger almost half way.
never hold something in your hand when trying to remove or install screws, that another thing a vise is for.
when grinding on a small part, don't hold it with your hand, thats what visegrips are made for.
always use good jackstands, a few days in the hospital & a lot of years later & it only hurts in cold weather.
don't miss with that hammer, it really does hurt. also, don't trust your friend's aim with a hammer.
never mess with plastic parts on the cooling system when the motor is hot, plastic + hot coolant under pressure = pain.
that piece of metal you just cut with a torch really is hot,.. let it hit the ground.
that air ratchet is stronger than you think, & will remove skin & cause leaks.
most bumpers are harder than your head.
clean up those mushroomed heads on those punches & chisels.
advice from a friend,.. never ever spin a bearing with air, it makes an enticing sound, but can remove fingers, eyes & cause other damage.

Ive been cut, burned, bruised and bashed a few too many times. Seems the only thing I get hurt doing on my bird is the starter. Ive had the starter hit me in the head once, the face twice and the nose once. The stock y pipe sure doesent leave much room for manuvering and re posistioning.
The lesson I learned is take the y pipe off or loosen it up before you do a starter. Then all you have to worry about is the choke stat crashing into your face and that happend twice in the same day once in removal and again in install.

What, did the bearing explode or something?
Some assorted injuries from the past.
Dropped transmission/engine block on foot.
More cuts scrapes and burns than i can count.
Punctures of many assorted types.
While hooking up a car to a wheel lift tow truck my friend lowered the lift onto my foot and was about to set it hard into the ground before i screamed many foul things at him.
Was putting a 8.9 sec 1/4 mile nova on a flat bed tow truck. We would drive the car onto the bed set the hooks then drop it. Car was up we set the hooks and as we yelled clear to drop the car back my hook fell off the lower arm on the front. Quickly i grabbed the hook and tossed it back in place right as the car dropped. My finger was yanked in between the hook and the lower arm and if i hadnt ripped it out right away it would have popped off.
Lost all the skin on the top of my pointer finger and broke the finger nail at the point it grows from the bone. (almost lost the finger from the middle of the second bone)
Lots of blood and obceninties plus a few days off and i was right as rain except for the finger nail that grew back weird.
Working on my 68 mustang alone i was pulling the exhaust off and the jackstands toppled over letting the car fall completely. I was pinned but had the jack within reach and got the car back up enough to slide free.
Removing a fuel pump from my olds 350 rocket not thinking i took a straight spray of fuel from the pump as i got the last bolt off even with my face blocking most of the blast it still managed to get gas on the wall 25 feet behing me! Nice eyewash session (love your eyewash it is your friend)
Shocked by spark plug wire while car was running more times than i can remember.
Alot of stuff hard to remember it all now though.

I watched my brand new 383 stroker engine start to fall off of the dolly that I had it on while I was trying to get it to the backyard. So my advise, don't try to catch something that weighs almost twice as much as you do. The end result could be alot worse than what happened to me.....
(Hopefully this pic won't get deleted, or get the thread locked. I don't think that it is that bad. This pic was taken three days after the initial injury. The block sandwiched my hand between the rim of my car, sliced through all 7 layers of skin, through the fat, and to the bone...)

WaaX, 87IROCZ350TPI, yes, the bearing exploded, this was done in a shop were the both of us worked at & we never found all of it, we found 3 or 4 of
the rollers, the inner race, & a small piece of the cage, where the rest of the cage went we don't know.
it almost took his fingers off.
the second i heard that noise i started screaming for him to stop but it was too late.
the bearing was probably up around 30,000 rpm or higher when it let go.
it was not a pretty site.
even if a bearing blown dry like that doesn't explode, its still junk.

another little story about one of my friends I forgot about.
one time he was trying to beat the pistons out of a poncho 350 before he bought the 428 to replace his 301 that junked out. well while he was hitting the piece of wood to remove the piston he had a stroke of genious he figured then would be a good time to remove his fingernail also.
wish I had pictures of that one but it turned under his nail very black and ended up needing to remove his whole fingernail. it's still not the same and kind of deformed

Remember skin and bones heal, parts are damn expensive and dont tend to heal all that well!

If that were my brand new motor about to hit the ground your damn right i would be under there to try and stop it.

the one that sticks in my mind, other than the carb backfire while I was looking down into it, or holding a sparkplug wire while hitting the remote starter to test for spark, was, while running out of storage space in my garage, I had a transverse fiberglas leaf spring for my vette, didn't know where to put it, so I balanced it on top of my drill press, hey, it's out of the way.
well of course, a few months later, I'm drilling, and it vibrates, falls down, straight down, vertical, and the metal fitting on the end of the spring whacks my toe, deep cut (not severed, although I was worried).
bleeding "profusely" I go lie down with a lot of paper towels to just wait it out. 4 hours later, still bleeding. well it finally stopped (that vitamin K coagulant kicking in, or whatever).
since it was still sore a week later, I went to the doctor, and he really told me how stupid I was for not seeing him right away, and says, after the x-rays, of course, too late to do anything about it now. it took several years for that swelling to go away.
I don't store leaf springs there anymore, only my extra IROC emergency jack.
