Power Steering Questions

How does the power steering pulley come off. I see it has a key in the middle that I presume screws off. I suspect that some sort of a puller is required.

Did GM use the same power steering pumps in all third gens or are they different between the models. Also what's a Saginaw pump.

Thanks.

It just pulls off; the puller presses on the shaft, and it has 2 little fingers that grab on the little groove around the hub of the pulley.

You put it back on with a tool that's basically just a piece of threaded rod that screws into the hole in the center of the shaft, and then a nut and a thick washer that press the pulley down onto the shaft.

Saginaw = the GM division that makes alot of running gear type things for GM cars

Pumps vary between models. There aren't a large number of variations, but they aren't all the same either.

Thanks Sofakindom for the information. I guess I will have to buy a removal tool somewhere to get the pulley off. The pulley on the pump I want to install is bent, looks like some guy tried to remove it without a removal tool. Are the single grove pulley pretty standard across all pumps as I got to get one of these aswell.

Thanks.

Pulleys are pretty much all the same (except for V-belt vs serpentine of course). That'll probably have to come from GM.

Here in the US, you can "rent" that tool at the parts stores, for free. Might be worth checking around where you are. Even if you have to buy it, it's a real simple thing, shouldn't be too expensive.
