Unknown sensor

My car is a 92 RS with the original 305 and TBI.I replaced my starter today and I noticed a green wire with a broken connector just above. There is a sensor just above it with nothing attached. My temp indicator works, the idle kicks down correctly during warm up. Anyone know what the sensor is? My haynes manual is of little or no help.

If it's at the base of the block near the starter, and not on the cylinder head, it's your knock sensor. If it's mounted in the cylinder head, it's your cooling fan switch.

It is on the block. The wire is very mangled and the connector is more thsn likely broken off inside the sensor's collar. Is the sensor in the water jacket? I have to pull it to see the rest of the connector.
