Fuel pump "woes", perhaps?

You're going to have to drop the tank, one way or another. A dead in-tank pump makes it very difficult for an external pump to suck through, so even if you put an in-line external in the system, the in-tank pump needs to come out.

There's a sticky on the Carb forum that shows how to convert an in-tank electric to a plain pick-up.
