new motor locked at 1500 rpm idle

Okay ive tried timing my motor now like 10 times and it just wont seem to idle or not run like a pile of crap
I tried timing it today at 6deg btdc and when i do that it either revs to 1500 as an idle speed, or drops to around 400 rpm and chugs there for 10 seconds then stalls. I checked the TPS and its fine. I know that valvelash needs to be set as there are a few loud ones but i cant set it if its at 1500rpm shooting oil at me
So anyone have any ideas what it could be?

thanks

What's your fuel pressure when it's doing this?

Is this motor a fresh rebuild? Is it a roller block or a flat tappet block? One thing I've seen occur that can cause those symptoms is a dirty or dysfunctional MAF sensor. Take a look at it, and if it looks dirty, clean it up. If there's too much soot in the sensor, it may not be sending a proper signal to the ECM and could cause improper fuel metering. Another thing: can you get a fuel pressure reading when it's "chugging"? Does the engine do this at different timing settings? Are you unplugging the advance wire to set your timing?

Its a fresh rebuilt flat tappet
I checked the maf screen and it looks clean,
The first time i attempted to time it i disconnected the wrong wire, but since have disconnected the esc wire
Ill have to get a second person with me to watch my fuel pressure tomorow

thanks for the help

1500 RPM means you are getting way too much air. This can either be due to a vacuum leak, high min idle air setting, or your IAC is stuck open. Either way, fix this before looking at anything else.

you by chance have that vacuum gauge?

you might need one. high idle speed, running rough, and in ability to run at lower rpms without dying is a very good indication of a vacuum leak.

just curious have you actually drove the car yet? how does it drive if you have done so?

okay, Just as many of you suggested it was indeed a massive vacuum leak.
The cheap gasket between the upper and lower stealth ram intake was damaged

Thanks for the help all
